What is a Digital Footprint?

"One's unique set of digital activities, actions, and communications that leave a data trace on the Internet or on a computer or other digital device and can identify the particular user or device:

Our online browsing habits are part of our passive digital footprint, created without our consent or knowledge, but our active digital footprint, especially on social media, can more easily be managed".

Have you ever used Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram, sent an email, surfed the Internet, left a comment on an online forum or newspaper website, filled in an online form, had your photo taken with a smart phone, had your name on an electoral register, shared an image via WhatsApp, used Spotify or Netflix? You have a unique set of traceable digital activities, actions and communications, manifested on the Internet and digital devices - a digital footprint.
