Mucociliary clearance in health and disease
General anaesthesia
The inhalation of anaesthetic agents slows cilia beat frequency. After approximately 90 minutes, the cilia become 'stunned' and stop beating altogether. This results in an absence of mucociliary clearance and a build up of secretions.
Summary:
- Impairs function and action of the cilia
- Reduces beat frequency
- Impairs secretion clearance
