Reflective Exercise

While watching the video think about which communication techniques seemed helpful and what could have been improved in the scenario. Record your thoughts on a blank sheet of paper. Keep your written work to show your tutor/manager.

  • Points to Remember
  • 1 Avoid looking at your computer or turning away when speaking.
  • 2 Waving in the patient’s line of vision is a common way of attracting attention.
  • 3 If a window is behind you, close the blinds or adjust your seating.
  • 4 Use your normal pace of speech. If you speak quickly you may need to slow down slightly. However, it doesn’t help to over enunciate or speak very slowly as this distorts lip patterns.
  • 5 Rephrasing certain words (e.g. ) and using shorter sentences may be useful.
  • 6 It may be helpful to type up a brief letter summarising what you have discussed especially with medication or treatment changes.
  • 7 Speak directly to the patient rather than family members.
