Equipment required for Catheterisation

In addition to selecting an appropriate catheter, which has been addressed within the previous learning activity (indications for catheterisation and catheter selection), the nurse must make appropriate choices about selection of other equipment required for catheterisation, including drainage systems. The choice of drainage systems will be addressed within learning object five of this unit. All equipment must be used in line with manufacturers' instructions.

Products and equipment for use during catheterisation must be stored appropriately at all times and stock rotation systems implemented - equipment does not remain sterilised indefinitely and expiry dates must be checked before using any item.

After obtaining consent from the patient, which is discussed later in this learning object, the nurse must prepare a trolley with all the equipment required to catheterise.

Task 1

1

After the trolley has been cleaned, what equipment does the nurse need to ensure they have with them before approaching the patient's bedside?

Enter your answer in the box below and then select Check answer.

- Catheterisation pack - some Trusts have stopped purchasing catheterisation packs and require staff to use a dressing pack instead, but this may be a false economy as additional supplementary items may ultimately be required.

- Two pairs of sterile gloves - the procedure is split into "dirty" and "clean" sections and two pairs of sterile gloves will be required.

- Cleaning solution - normal saline sachets are sufficient

- A lubricant

- Sterile water to inflate the balloon - this may be included in a syringe with the catheter

- An appropriate catheter

- An appropriate drainage system
