Module 2: Basic Motivational Interviewing

In this module you have learnt about motivational interviewing. This is a skill that requires deliberate practice. Do you have a colleague or friend that you could practise with?

You learnt about respecting autonomy, supporting self-efficacy and systematically eliciting the patient’s own thoughts about change (desire, ability, reasons and needs) so they work through their ambivalence.

Don’t be afraid of an inconclusive result to the consultation. Resistance is a normal part of change. Prescriptive advice is easy but is no more effective, and may damage a patient’s future engagement with your service.

What next?

In the next module you will be learning how to support patients that are ready for change.

Consider taking a break before starting the next module.
