Making a 70% Ethanol solution

Support Video for BL0111 (First year BSc) physiology module at King’s College London.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When water and alcohol are mixed there is a physical contraction of the resultant volume. i.e. ethanol-water mixtures actually have less volume than the sum of their individual components at the given fractions. For example, mixing equal volumes of 100% ethanol and water results in only 1.92 volumes of mixture. Mixing ethanol and water is also exothermic. If you are making ethanol solutions for analytical chemistry you should familiarize yourself with these physical properties before using this simple technique for making solutions.
