Reflective Exercise

While watching the video think about which communication techniques seemed helpful and what could have been improved in the scenario. Record your thoughts on a blank sheet of paper. Keep your written work to show your tutor/manager.

  • Points to Remember
  • 1 Check the patient’s preferred method of communication and document this for other staff members.
  • 2 Unfamiliar accents may be more challenging to lip read.
  • 3 Check the patient has his/her glasses on if they use these.
  • 4 Make sure light is in your face and that you are at eye level.
  • 5 Tiredness and anxiety can reduce the ability to lip read.
  • 6 You may need to use visual gestures, repeat, rephrase and write down what you say. Sometimes the person may only be struggling to lip read a particular phrase so continuous writing may not be necessary.
