Male urethral catheterisation

The principles of male catheterisation are the same as for female catheterisation, but there are a few minor points of technique that warrant discussion. Again an aseptic non-touch technique must be used. After gaining informed consent, the patient should be positioned lying comfortably in a recumbent or semi-recumbent position in bed.

The trolley and equipment are prepared as for female catheterisation (see figure).
