Balloon
The catheter is inserted until urine flows and then advanced further to ensure that the balloon is fully inside the bladder before inflating. If no urine flows, the length of the catheter (inserted up to the bifurcation of the inflation arm) can also indicate that this has been inserted far enough.
The balloon is then inflated slowly during which the nurse should watch the patient's reaction. If they experience any pain the balloon may still be within the prostatic urethra and inflation should be stopped to prevent trauma.
Once the balloon is inflated, the drainage system should be attached to the catheter, equipment removed and the patient cleaned and made comfortable. Always remember to reduce the foreskin if necessary!
