A provisional diagnosis of urinary tract infection was made.

Mr Davis was prescribed a seven-day course of Trimethoprim 200 mg twice daily.

He is offered paracetamol to control the pain.

Common organisms causing UTI
Common in all types of UTI:
  • 1. E coli esp serogoups 01, 02, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 075, 0150
  • 2. Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • 3. Other Klebsiella spp
  • 4. Enterobacter spp
Linked to kidney stones:
  • 5. Proteus spp
Common in catheter associated UTI:
  • 6. Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • 7. Enterococcus spp
  • 8. Staphylococcus aureus
Common in young sexually active females:
  • 9. Staphylococcus saprophyticus

Virulence factors
Fimbriae (P fimbriae)
  • 1. Certain O,K H serotypes
  • 2. K antigen (higher quantity)
  • 3. Type 1 fimbriae
  • 4. aerobactin
  • 5. cytotoxin necrotizing factor type 1(cnf)
  • 6. Uropathogenic specific protein

  • 1. Renal infectiuon
  • 2. Renal calculus
  • 3. Prostatitis
  • 4. Urethritis (including non-gonococcal urethritis)
