Patient experiences of learning the technique

Patients face a number of challenges when learning ISC, including psychological issues, physical problems and interactions with service providers (Logan et al, 2008). Relaxed and friendly communication styles can help patients overcome the embarrassment and anxiety associated with mastering the skill and facilitates learning of the technique (Logan et al, 2008).

- The pace of learning should be determined by the patient

- Allow adequate time and sufficient supervised sessions for the patient to feel sufficiently confident to perform the technique unaided

- Provide contact details for patients who require additional help and support

- Use language that the patient can understand

- Follow patients up after two weeks and again after a few months to ensure correct procedure is being followed, to troubleshoot problems and to promote adherence
