Frequency of catheterisation

The frequency with which patients will need to self-catheterise will be determined individually and is determined according to the volumes of urine drained. Some patients will be passing urine urethrally as well as retaining a volume of urine in the bladder, while others will be unable to pass urine at all.

Task 18

How frequently should a patient self-catheterise?

Enter your answer in the box below and then select Check answer.

The patient should catheterise sufficiently frequently to:

- keep residual volume below 250mls (larger volumes predispose to the development of infection)

- prevent urine leaking between catheterisations

Catheterisation should not be performed more than two hourly throughout the day
