Product choice

There are a plethora of intermittent catheters on the market (see table below). It is beyond the scope of this object to cover the comparative effectiveness of the different types of product in detail, but this is addressed in the NICE infection control guidelines (NICE, 2012).

Many catheters have a drainage bag attached, which can be particularly helpful when learning the technique, especially for women, and can be useful if access to a toilet to catheterise into is limited.
