Cycloplegic refraction involves the use of cyclopentolate eye drops that dilate the pupil and relax the ciliary muscles that focus the lens (accommodation), as these can otherwise mask an underlying refractive error. Refraction can be undertaken by an orthoptist (paramedical staff specialising in squints), optician, or ophthalmologist.
Following pupil dilation, the underlying refractive error is measured, so that spectacles can be prescribed if needed. In addition to providing clearer vision, corrective spectacles can often help control a squint.
