Bill is a 70 year old man who presents to his GP because he thought ‘he had the flu’.
He describes a four day history of a productive cough. His sputum has become thick and yellow and he has also noticed some streaks of blood. A day prior to seeing his GP, he has felt feverish and complained of general malaise, shortness of breath, shaking and chills. He has also developed pain in his right chest that becomes worse when he coughs and on inspiration.
He lives alone and is a retired lorry driver.
