Unit 4: Refractive Error

  • Light rays coming from closer objects are more divergent and so the lens needs to be more convex (powerful) to focus the object on the retina. This increase in lens power is called accommodation.
  • During accommodation the ciliary body contracts, causing its inner circumference to reduce. This relaxes the lens zonules and so the lens becomes more convex (powerful) and therefore can focus near objects.
