Unit 7: Gradual Loss of Vision

Introduction

  • Leading cause of blindness in Western world
  • Associated with increasing age
  • Affects central vision
  • Peripheral vision is unaffected so patients often live independently and can navigate

Dry AMD

Slowly progressive atrophy of macular retinal pigment epithelial cells (the RPE cells lie under the light sensitive neuro retina).

Wet AMD

New choroidal blood vessels grow into and under the retina. These bleed or leak fluid, causing macular oedema and scarring. Less common than dry AMD, but usually more severe.
