Gamma Cameras
Routine testing & Frequency of Tests
Routine testing
Routine testing is to check for any malfunction of the system or any long term degradation of image quality.
Frequency of Tests
The frequency at which these tests are done needs to be a balance of the ability to spot changes within the cameras before they become problems but to impinge on the clinical service as little as possible. Manufacturers will suggest a set of tests, these will tend towards being less time consuming, but also less in depth. The IPEM book (report number 86) gives an extensive list of quality control tests and their frequencies, but some may feel these too extensive.
The parts of the camera that are more prone to breakage will depend heavily on the design of the camera. For example some gantry designs are more prone to problems with the centre of rotation, whereas others will need the PMTs re-tuned on a regular basis to keep it working optimally. A sensible approach is to start with an extensive set of tests and then tailor it to the piece of equipment as trends in the results are found.
