If painful, it is sometimes necessary to instil anaesthetic eye drops to examine patient, eg. proxymetacaine or tetracaine.

• Conjunctival injection
• Rust ring can form in 48 hours with metallic corneal foreign bodies
• A white corneal infiltrate suggests bacterial keratitis (refer to ophthalmology)
• Linear, vertical fluorescein staining on the superior cornea suggests subtarsal foreign body
