This can be tested by asking patient to look at a red object and describe if it appears desaturated (less red) compared with the healthy eye. Within ophthalmology clinics it is usually tested using Ishihara colour plates. These contain coloured numbers against a coloured background and the patient is asked to identify each number in turn.
