Management

Corneal foreign bodies

  • Superficial foreign bodies can sometimes be dislodged with a moist cotton bud following topical anaesthetic eye drops
  • Prescribe chloramphenicol eye ointment qds for one week
  • Refer embedded foreign bodies to ophthalmology

Subtarsal foreign body

  • Remove under topical anaesthesia with moist cotton bud
  • Multiple or small foreign bodies may be removed by irrigation with saline
  • Prescribe chloramphenicol eye ointment qds for one week

Advise all patients to return if symptoms persist more than 24-48 hours.
