Investigation

  • Determine if any intraocular foreign body
    • Orbital X-ray may reveal metal FBs. Specific images are available with eyes in different positions, to establish the FB is intraocular (the FB moves with eye position), so note reason on request form
    • CT if high index of suspicion (avoid MRI if metal FB)
  • MRI is contraindicated as the magnetic fields can move the foreign body
  • Eyelid eversion to rule out subtarsal foreign body
  • Corneal examination using fluorescein
