Katie Tang has just turned 32. She went to her GP because she was feeling short of breath and recently started experiencing chest pain. In fact her illness started a week ago, with general flu-like symptoms, aches and fever. She thought it was a common cold and would resolve but was getting concerned because her breathlessness was worsening.
She is worried because she is increasingly finding herself short of breath and has chest pain on breathing. She had been well previously, and returned two weeks ago from her ten year wedding anniversary holiday in the Caribbean. She had a few mosquito bites on her left leg and she noticed some swelling in this area.
The GP was concerned because on examination she was tachycardic with a low blood pressure and her finger probe oxygen saturations were low at 92%. The GP performed a 12-lead ECG and thought the ECG looked abnormal. The GP sent her to A&E with a referral letter for her to be seen by the on-call Medical team.
