A Good Bolus is Essential
SVC time-activity curve depicts a good injection bolus
The accuracy of the first pass study depends on the quality of the injection bolus.
The technique to ensure the bolus is a good one is described below:
- An indwelling cannula should be in place
- Right median cubital vein is the preferred site
- The arm should be fully abducted
- A small volume of radionuclide should be used
- Flush in with a large volume of saline
- Use sedation if necessary
A good bolus:
- Enters the heart as a single peak in activity
- Is compact and does not have a prolonged tail of activity
If bolus is poor:
- Analysis is inaccurate
- You must repeat study
