Unit 2: Visual field defects, double vision & optic disc swelling

  • Lesions in specific locations in the visual pathway give characteristic visual field defects.
  • Visual field defects are often asymptomatic & picked up by optometrists on routine screening as the visual field of one eye can compensate for the defect in the other. Binocular field of vision .
  • Some visual field defects can be artefacts i.e. fatigue or eyebrows encroaching on the upper field of vision or from spectacle frames.
