- Ocular involvement varies with the level of immunocompromise.
- Determined by the level of HIV virus in the blood (viral load) and the CD4 count:
- CD4 count >1000 cells/mL is normal
- CD4 count <50 cell/mL is very low with high risk of ocular infection, especially cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis
