Retinal Vein Occlusion

Retinal vein occlusion occurs due to blockage of a central retinal vein (central retina vein occlusion, as shown in the image), or a more peripheral branch retinal vein occlusion (with haemorrhage localized to that region of the retina). As with other atherosclerotic diseases, age, diabetes, raised cholesterol and hypertension are all risk factors.
